Our History

We began as Arcade Linoleum Company in 1936. We were located in the Arcade Theater Building in the Hamilton area of Baltimore. By 1939, we outgrew our space and moved to a newly built building on Harford Road near Broadway. Between 1939 to 1961, we occupied more and more of that building until we once again ran out of room. In 1961, we moved to another newly built building on Loch Raven Boulevard near Joppa Road. Once again we continued to expand, even adding an addition to the building. That was to be our home for 55 years. In 2016, the building was sold and we moved to our current location on Rossville Boulevard just east of Belair Road.

When we moved to the Loch Raven location, we changed our name to Arcade Floors because vinyl was replacing linoleum as the hard surface flooring of choice. In the early 1960’s, tufting made carpet more affordable. Carpet was added to our offering and we added “& Carpets” to our name. From the very beginning, we had a very strong relationship with Armstrong. Arcade Floors and Carpets was Armstrong’s first Armstrong Floor Fashion Center in the country and a few years later, the first Armstrong Carpet Studio.

In addition to our residential work, we were doing a substantial quantity of work for Baltimore area homebuilders. Homebuilders want partners that could do it all. Prefinished hardwood floors were becoming popular with homebuilders and we expanded in the hardwood floor business.

Our Showroom, Circa 1940  The Baltimore Gas & Electric Company went into the home improvement business in the1980’s. Arcade Floors & Carpets was selected as their flooring contractor. At their insistence, we entered the ceramic tile arena. By 1990, Arcade was offering one of most extensive lines of floor coverings in the Baltimore area.

In 1992, we were invited to join Carpet One, a co-operative of fine floor covering retailers. Being invited was a honor. It meant we had to be in the top 3% of flooring retailers in the country. We were judged on volume, credit worthiness, and reputation among suppliers, customers, and existing Carpet One members. As part of Carpet One, we can offer our customers vast selections of flooring products at the best prices and with the best warranties in the industry.
